Students are usually referred to the TLG school by their school or the local authority. This happens when they have decided that additional intervention is needed to meet your child’s needs and help them make progress.
TLG is not meant to be a long-term solution for your child and it is our intention to equip them to move on and succeed - either back into mainstream school, or onto college, training or employment.
TLG operates a range of extended school programmes where students can continue to engage and learn beyond the school day and during the holidays. These might include breakfast clubs and workshops in sports, media, arts and music. TLG also runs social and cultural trips and visits including weekend residentials within the UK and international trips which in the past have included Uganda and Ghana.
Our learning environment is structured with clear boundaries. The TLG school rules and behaviour principles are set out in a ‘contract’ that your child will sign before they start at TLG.
We believe that good attendance is a key to achievement and will work hard with you and your child to overcome any barriers to good attendance.
Students are expected to attend all sessions (morning and afternoon) in their TLG programme, unless absence has been authorised by TLG or your child’s referring school. As parent or carer, you will need to provide a reason for any absence and should telephone the school at the start of the school day to inform staff.
Our small groups and high staff-students ratios provide a setting where your child will be accepted and cared for while being supported and challenged. We tailor the learning and level of support for each individual, giving your child the best chance of making progress and achieving success.
At TLG we are committed to working together to create an environment where no form of bullying is tolerated. We will encourage and help students to treat each other with respect and kindness, challenge any bullying we see or hear and impose appropriate sanctions for bullying.
If you tell us your child is being bullied we will deal with it quickly, sensitively and effectively and help ensure that the bullying does not continue. We will support your child while the issue is being dealt with and afterwards.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people as defined for the purposes of this summary as: protecting children and young people from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s health or development; ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
TLG follows a recruitment process that makes sure all appropriate checks are carried out on staff and volunteers to ensure they are suitable to work with children and young people.
All new staff undergo an induction programme, where they become familiar with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding and welfare issues, such as health and safety, first aid, bullying and child protection. All TLG staff receive refresher training in safeguarding annually.
Each TLG school has a child protection policy and procedures in place that are in accordance with locally agreed inter-agency procedures. This includes having a Designated Officer who is specially trained to deal with child protection concerns and liaise with other agencies as necessary.
The Child Protection Policy outlines the action staff should take if they are concerned that a child or young person is suffering significant harm or is likely to do so, and the action that should be taken to promote the welfare of a child in need of additional support, even if they are not suffering harm or are at immediate risk.
TLG has a policy for dealing with allegations of abuse made against staff or volunteers. These procedures comply with the Government’s statutory guidance and locally agreed inter-agency guidance. TLG’s policies and procedures relating to Safeguarding and welfare are reviewed and updated at least annually and are available at the bottom of this page or upon request from any member of TLG staff.
At TLG, we work to provide high quality guidance for students and their families in relation to the dangers of the online digital world. We also provide guidance and support to help stay safe and avoid these risks and dangers.
If you are worried about the safety and welfare of a student at TLG, you can speak to any member of staff. You can do this even if your concern involves the conduct of another member of staff.
